Metal roofing is the work we get asked about most on Whidbey Island. We install standing seam metal roofs on houses, shops, barns, carports and patio covers. The panels come from Nu-Ray Metals, a metal panel manufacturer based in Puyallup, Washington.

Roofs here sit in wet shade under big firs. Moss takes hold on north facing planes, and needles and cones pile into the valleys. A standing seam metal roof gives that debris a slick surface with nothing to grab. Most of it washes or blows off on its own.
Wind is the other island problem. Island County design tables list a basic wind speed of 97 mph, and exposed bluff and waterfront lots see more. Standing seam panels lock together at the seam and sit on concealed clips fastened into the deck. The fasteners stay under the metal, out of the weather.
Metal also lasts a long time. Industry service life studies of standing seam steel roofs report decades of service. You pick the panel color off the manufacturer color chart. That works the same way as picking asphalt colors on our shingle color page.
We start with a tear-off. The old roofing comes off so we can see the decking underneath. Soft or rotted sheathing gets cut out and replaced before new material goes down. If the roof still has years left in it, a roof repair may be the better call.
Underlayment goes over the deck next, then the eave, rake and valley metal. Panels run from the eave up to the ridge and snap together at the seam. Trim and closures finish the edges. Ridge venting and intake venting keep air moving under the new roof.
Skylights, vents, pipes and chimneys get flashed as the panels go on. A metal roof gives you fewer places to patch later, so those details are worth doing carefully. Most houses take a few days, and the weather sets the pace.
