Gutter installation is the last piece that keeps rain off your siding and away from your foundation. We put new gutters and downspouts on homes, shops, barns and carports across Whidbey Island. We use seamless aluminum gutters, formed in one length for each run of the roof. Rain here runs from October into April, and a gutter that overflows all winter does real damage.
Most gutter work comes with something else attached. Old gutters usually hang on fascia that has gone soft, so the wood gets fixed first. New gutters also go up during a roof replacement, because the roof edge and the gutter meet. Seamless gutters are rolled out of a coil of aluminum at your house. Each run of the roof gets one unbroken piece. The seams that remain are at corners, downspout outlets and end caps. Those joints are where old sectional gutters start to drip.
Gutter size follows the roof area that drains into each run. A 5-inch K-style gutter with a 2 by 3 inch downspout handles most island homes. Large roof planes, long runs and steep pitches send more water at once. Those get a 6-inch gutter with a 3 by 4 inch downspout.
Hangers screw through the trough into solid wood behind the fascia board. The trough gets a slight fall toward each outlet so water does not stand in it. Downspout count matters as much as gutter size. With more outlets, each one carries less water.
A gutter only moves water to the end of the roof. What happens next is what keeps a crawlspace dry. We aim each downspout away from the foundation. A splash block or a pad of crushed rock goes where the water lands.
The state stormwater manual for Western Washington gives homeowners a rough yardstick. It allows up to 700 square feet of roof to drain to one splash block. It also asks for about 50 feet of planted ground below that spot. That distance is measured to a property line, a building, a steep slope or a creek.
Some lots need the water piped underground to a tightline or a drywell. That is drainage work, and soil and groundwater decide whether it will even drain. We set the downspouts and show you where such a line would tie in. Rules change by jurisdiction, so confirm yours with Island County Planning and Community Development.
Old gutters sag in the middle and drip at every seam. Sometimes a whole run leans out from the wall. Often the fascia behind them has gone soft from years of overflow. That wood gets wood rot repair before the new brackets go in.
Island roofs sit under big Douglas fir and cedar. Cones and needles fill the trough, and moss grows in what is left. Gutter guards cover the top of the gutter so the coarse debris rolls off the edge. Fir needles are the hard part, because they are thin enough to sit on a fine mesh.
Gutters come off when new siding goes on, then go back up on the finished wall. The same thing happens at the roof edge. There the drip edge and the first course of shingles sit over the back of the gutter. Doing the gutters in that same visit means the brackets land in new wood.
