Wood rot repair starts with finding every piece of wet wood behind the soft spot you can see. We cut the rot back to sound material, fix what let the water in, and set new wood in. On Whidbey Island the usual spots are fascia, soffits, window and door sills, and siding. We also find it in the framing under carports, patio covers and porches.
Rot is a water problem before it is a wood problem. A failed flashing, a gutter that overflows, or a leaking window can feed it for years. So we track the water back to where it starts and correct that first. When the water is coming through the roof, we handle the roof repair at the same time.

Rot is a fungus, and it lives on wood that stays wet. Wood held under about 20 percent moisture does not decay. Our wet season runs roughly October through April, so exterior wood here has months to stay damp.
Shade is the other half of it. Big Douglas fir and cedar hang over a lot of island homes. Their needles pack into gutters and valleys and hold water against wood. North-facing walls and roof planes grow moss and dry out slowly.
Salt air near the water is hard on paint and on metal. Once a paint film cracks or a flashing fails, water gets behind the wood. It sits there, and the wood starts to go soft. That is why rot here often shows up high on a wall, where nobody looks.
We open the area up first. Soft wood gets probed with an awl or a screwdriver until the tool stops sinking in. Rot almost always runs further than the stain on the surface shows. Cutting it short is why some repairs come back.
Then we find the water. It might be a flashing lapped the wrong way, a gutter running over, or caulk that gave up. We fix that source before any new wood goes in.
New material goes in, gets flashed and sealed, then primed and painted to match what is around it. The old wood and debris leave with us. On one custom carport and patio cover, dry rot had taken half of the support structure. We rebuilt that half, checked the rest for soundness, improved the fascia material, and painted the structure.
Fascia is the board the gutter hangs on, so it takes water first. When gutters clog or pitch the wrong way, the back of the fascia stays wet. We replace the rotted run, fix the roof edge, and hang new gutters on sound wood.
Soffits rot from the inside when warm air gets into a cold overhang. Blocked vents, a bath fan dumping into the attic, or a roof leak will do it. We replace the soffit and put vented material back where the roof needs the air.
Behind siding, rot shows up at butt joints, corners, and where a wall meets a deck or roof. If it has reached the sheathing, that run of siding comes off so we can get to it. Sound siding gets patched in. A wall that is far gone gets new siding instead.
