Cedar shingle siding and board and batten for island homes

Cedar siding installation gives your walls the look of real wood. We install new cedar siding, re-side older homes in cedar and handle cedar siding repair. That includes cedar shingle siding and board and batten cedar, with lap or bevel cedar as another profile. As a cedar siding contractor based in Langley, we work across Whidbey Island, Camano Island and the Skagit side.

Cedar suits an island cottage or a waterfront home, and it needs a sound wall behind it. The barrier and flashing go on first, to keep wind-driven rain out of the sheathing. When old siding comes off over soft wood, wood rot repair comes before any new cedar. For fiber cement or vinyl, see our siding installation page.

What We Handle

  • New cedar siding and re-siding in cedar on homes, cottages, shops and barns
  • Cedar shingle siding on walls and gables, with corner boards or woven corners
  • Board and batten cedar siding, with lap or bevel cedar as another profile
  • Failed siding taken off, and the sheathing and framing checked behind it
  • A water-resistive barrier or breathable membrane behind the new cedar
  • Flashing at windows, doors, roof lines and decks before the siding goes on
  • Cedar siding repair: split, cupped, rotted or wind-damaged shingles and boards replaced to match
  • Cut ends primed or stained, and the old siding hauled away

Why choose cedar siding on Whidbey Island?

Cedar shingle siding and board and batten cedar are the classic look of island cottages and waterfront homes. One of our island jobs pairs board and batten cedar siding with cedar dip shingles on the gables. All of that cedar went on over a breathable membrane.

The Olympic Mountains put Whidbey in a rain shadow, yet rain still falls on about 120 days a year. The south end of the island averages 30-plus inches of rain a year. Wind off the water pushes that rain and salt air into the walls. Waterfront and bluff homes are the most exposed.

The cedar industry says bare cedar loses its natural color as it weathers and turns grey. In very dry climates it weathers to an even, silvery grey. In most other climates it weathers unevenly and can look dark and blotchy.

Re-siding in cedar, from the sheathing out

Re-siding in cedar starts with taking the failed siding off. Then we check the sheathing and framing behind it. On a beachfront restoration on Shore Avenue, the original siding had no vapor barrier or proper underlayment beneath it. The building was badly damaged as a result.

A water-resistive barrier or breathable membrane goes behind the new cedar so the wall can dry. Flashing goes in at windows, doors, roof lines and decks before the siding. The Shore Avenue walls got breathable membranes, with waterproof flashings at the weak points. The new siding there is sanded shingles with woven corners.

The cedar industry's installation guide spells out the details. Siding stays at least 2 inches off a roof or deck so it does not wick water. Trim at the base of the wall sits at least 6 inches above the ground. Every cut end gets primer or stain.

Cedar siding repair or cedar siding replacement?

Cedar siding repair makes sense when the damage sits in one place. Maybe a few shingles split or cupped, or a windstorm tore boards off one wall. We replace the damaged shingles and boards to match what is there.

Cedar siding replacement is the better call when the trouble runs across the house. Soft spots on more than one wall point that way. So does old siding with no barrier behind it, since that layer goes on under the cedar.

A free on-site estimate settles which one your walls need. We check the trim and the flashing at every window and door, because water travels. If the windows are failing too, window replacement fits best while the wall is open.

FAQ

Cedar Siding Questions, Answered

Common questions about cedar siding across Whidbey Island, Camano Island and the Skagit side. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (360) 544-9655

What is the difference between cedar shake siding and cedar shingle siding?
Many homeowners call cedar shingle siding "shake siding." To the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau, shingles are sawn on both faces and shakes are split from the block. Shakes are thicker at the butt, while shingles give clean, consistent lines. The cedar shingle siding on our jobs is sawn shingles.
How long does cedar siding last?
A national home-improvement guide says cedar siding lasts 20 to 40 years when properly maintained. The same guide says it needs more maintenance than engineered wood or fiber cement siding. On exposed waterfront walls, the waterproofing behind the cedar matters most.
How much does cedar siding installation cost?
The price follows the wall area and the grade of cedar shingle or board you choose. How much rot sits behind the old siding matters, and so do the trim and window flashing. Bluff and waterfront lots can be harder to reach and set up on. Market ranges for cedar and other siding are in our guide to siding replacement cost in Washington. Estimates are free, so call or text (360) 544-9655 and we will get back to you.
Do I need a permit to re-side a house in cedar?
It depends on the office that covers your address. Island County publishes a list of work exempt from a building permit, and siding is not on it. Oak Harbor, Coupeville and Langley handle permits inside their own city limits. We check with the right office before the old siding comes off.
Can you replace a few cedar shingles and match the rest?
Often, yes. We replace split, cupped, rotted or wind-damaged shingles and match the size and exposure of the ones around them. Fresh cedar has not greyed yet, so a patch on an old, bare wall can stand out at first.
Does cedar siding need a barrier behind it?
Yes. The cedar industry guide says building paper on the sheathing helps keep rain and snow out of the walls. It also lets moisture vapor escape. Where an air space is wanted, the siding goes on furring strips so moisture can vent.

They installed a new metal roof on the house we purchased and were able to start quickly which meant it was nearly done by the time we moved in. We had a great experience working with Jeff who was very helpful with suggestions on some cosmetic changes we made and the entire roof and gables came out nicely. Very pleased with this company and would recommend them to anyone on Whidbey looking for roofing or siding work.

Whidbey Roof and Siding did an outstanding job. Very professional! No playing games came in with the lowest bid. We did run into a few surprises, but Jeff was very clear and transparent about what it would take to correct the issue. Very glad I had someone who could deal with the issues. As one recent visitor said the skylight looks like it was here all along and not an after thought addition. Highly recommend
